I am sorry to bring a discordant note in this concert of praises but I could not help feeling drowsy all along these 3 cantatas. The soloists, in particular the bespectacled very young one, want volume. I regret to prefer far more the same 3 cantatas by the Thomanerchor.

The Passio secundum Joannem or St John Passion (German: Johannes-Passion), BWV 245, is a Passion or oratorio by Johann Sebastian Bach, the older of the surviving Passions by Bach. It was written during his first year as director of church music in Leipzig and was first performed on April 7, 1724, at Good Friday Vespers at the St. Nicholas Church.

Wth artistic highlights like yhe two boy alto solos, Chrstophe Coin´s viola da gamba, the recitatives by Kurt Equilus, the lively Tölzer Boys Choir and a glühend Harnoncourt, then this performance of Bach´s Johannes-Passion is hard to surpass! - Also it´s an open question if any Bach piece has ever been performed more passionate than by the 14 yo "Panito" Iconomou with "Es ist Vollbracht" at 1:20:25.

Auch 39 Jahre nach dieser Aufführung hat die Genialität von N. Harnoncourt nichts eingebüsst und auch der Tölzer Knabenchor trägt mit der gewaltigen Klangfülle dazu bei. Chapeau!

This performance has its strengths and weaknesses. I must say one case of "historically informed" carried too far was to put a boy soprano opposite Peter Schreier (by many accounts the greatest tenor of all time with that genre) with the inherent imbalance in such a matchup. While "historically informed" has its place, one important aspect of Bach is his versatility with all the zillions of different ways his music has been performed.
